Rocky, at certain spots eroded region with shrub vegetation and forests in the south-western Sakar. It is located on the left bank of the Maritsa river, to the north-east of the river, reaching on the east the Yerusalimovo – Izvorovo road, on the north the Oryhovo – Kolarovo road, on the west a dirt road passing along the ridge over the river Goljamata Reka. The region is occupied mostly by open grasslands – farmlands and meadows overgrown with xerothermal grass associations, dominated by Dichantium ischaemum, Poa bulbosa, etc., and more rarely with meso-xerothermal grass vegetation. Shrubs of Paliurus spina-christi mixed with Jasminum fruticans and combined with xerothermal grass formations with Mediterranean elements, like Nigella damascena, are dispersed throughout the region. Forests cover only one-third of the territory. These are primary mixed broadleaved forests of Quercus pubescens and Quercus virgiliana with Mediterranean elements, at places with secondary origin, often mixed with Carpinus orientalis (Bondev 1991).
Aves:
Radinchevo is an area representative for birds dependent on dry grassland habitats. It supports 119 bird species, 25 of which are listed in the Red Data Book for Bulgaria (1985). Of the birds occurring there 54 species are of European conservation concern (SPEC) (BirdLife International, 2004), 4 of them being listed in category SPEC 1 as globally threatened, 19 in SPEC 2 and 31 in SPEC 3 as species threatened in Europe. The area provides suitable habitats for 36 species, included in Annex 2 of the Biodiversity Act, which need special conservation measures. Thirty-four of them are listed also in considerable numbers. The Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus, Black Stork Ciconia nigra, Stone Curlew Burchinus oedicnemus and the Masked Shrike Lanius nubicus also breed there in significant populations. During migration the Pygmy Cormorant Phalacrocorax pygmeus, the Corncrake Crex crex occur in the area. The Great Bustard /Otis tarda/ have also been recorded in the region in the past (Borisov 1988).
Amenazas:
The area of Radinchevo is sensitive mainly to human activities related to livestock and agriculture. A decrease in grazing as well as conversion of pastures to arable lands cause loss of grassland habitats for birds. The dry grasslands are particularly vulnerable to fires both natural and artificial burning of pastures. In the year 2000 50% of the area was burned. Existing electrical power lines are dangerous for raptors and storks. Direct threats to birds are caused also by taking chicks and eggs from the nests, collection of animals, as well as trapping and poisoning of them. One of the potential threats both to the habitats and to the birds in the area is the development of wind turbine farms.
La protección legal:
About 7% of the area is protected by law through designation of the “Bakarliyata” Protected Area in 2001. The aim is to protect the threatened reptiles, birds, mammals and plants, as well as typical for the Sakar mountain habitats. In 1997 the area was designated as Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.
